Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are essential to the success of RFS programs. The
following volunteer opportunities offer a great chance to make a
difference in the lives of our new friends and neighbors. If you are

One-Day Volunteer Opportunity
Taste the World Festival,
Sunday, March 16, 2008, various shifts between
10:00a.m.-6:00p.m.
Callanwolde Fine Arts Center
Taste the World is
RFS’s annual celebration of food and culture from all around
the world. Featuring culinary tastings from local Atlanta
international restaurants, cultural displays, fashion show,
youth activities, and art auction. Volunteers are needed to
help pick up food, hand out food tastings and other
behind-the-scenes tasks. Requires: A one-day
commitment of three hours. |
After-school Tutors, August – June, Monday
– Thursday, 2:45 – 5:45 p.m.
RFS Stone Mountain Youth Facilities
In a class setting, work
directly with refugee children in grades 1-12 who have been in the U.S.
less than 5 years. These young people come to our after-school Program to
enjoy a safe and enriching environment. Tutors help students complete
their homework and improve reading and writing skills. Tutors also may
assist the Classroom Supervisors in creating and implementing educational
and social enrichment activities, including sports, arts, gardening,
multi-cultural education, and more.
Requires: a minimum commitment of three hours, one day a week,
for one semester.
One-to-One Tutor/Mentors, August – June,
Monday – Friday, 3 – 6 p.m.
RFS Stone Mountain Youth Facilities
Work one-to-one with a refugee
youth in grades 1-12 struggling with English or any language-based
subject. The One-to-One Coordinator will provide a student evaluation and
individually designed curriculum that introduces and reinforces core
skills needed to succeed in school. A steady tutoring relationship is
often a transforming experience that offers special attention and
encourages growth and the development of confidence.
Requires: A minimum commitment of two hours, one day a week,
for one semester.
New Arrival/ESL Tutors, August – June,
Monday – Friday, 2:45 – 5:45 p.m.
RFS Stone Mountain Youth Facilities
In a classroom setting, work
directly with new arrival refugee youth (those who have been in the U.S.
less than 2 years). Tutors will be assigned to a New Arrival Classroom and
aid the Classroom Supervisor in after-school enrichment activities
(tutoring, basic social lessons, basic English skills). Tutors will serve
as a steady and welcoming presence. The warmth and patience of a devoted
tutor inspires growth and confidence.
Requires: a minimum commitment of three hours, one day a week,
for 3 months.
Family Literacy Tutors/Mentors – flexible
hours
Clarkston and Stone Mountain area
Volunteers work one-on-one with a refugee family, in the family’s home,
providing English language tutoring and also serving as crucial link to
American culture. Improving English skills is an important step in a
refugee family’s path to self-sufficiency. RFS provides orientation,
training and resources. Requires: A minimum commitment of one – two
hours, once a week, for three months. Sessions are scheduled at the
convenience of volunteers and families.
Y.E.S. (Youth Empowered For Success),
August - June,
Saturday 10a.m.-1p.m.
RFS Stone Mountain Community Center
A positive role model is crucial for refugee adolescents to
succeed in the classroom and the workforce. Volunteers are needed to serve
as tutors/mentors to refugee youth ages 14-18. The program focuses on
academic tutoring as well as enrichment workshops focused on social,
emotional, and professional development.
Requires: A minimum commitment of at least three Saturday sessions
per month for a semester.
Parent As Teacher Program Assistant, flexible
work hours
RFS Stone Mountain Community Center and various sites in the Stone
Mountain/Clarkston area.
Join PAT Coordinator on home
visits to involve refugee families with this new program designed to give
parents suggestions for how to teach and nurture their children. All
activities will be implemented under the supervision of the Program
Coordinator.
Requires: A commitment of at least 3 months, for
approximately 6 hours a month.
Journalism/PR/Graphic Design Assistant,
flexible work hours
Telecommuting and RFS Stone Mountain Community Center
Along with guidance from RFS’
Development Consultant, design the format of and write stories for RFS
publications. Write press releases and create relationships with local
media. Assist in the development, design and content of the annual
report.
Requires: A commitment of at least 3 months, 6-8 hours per
week.
Marketing and PR Assistant, flexible work
hours
Telecommuting and RFS Stone Mountain Community Center
Assist in the development and
creation of marketing and communications tools for RFS, including: website
content, RFS newsletter and program brochures. Research and develop
content for human interest stories about the refugee/immigrant women and
children served at RFS. Assist in preparing power point presentations for
RFS programs.
Requires: Strong writing and communications skills; a
minimum commitment of six hours a week, for three months.
Computer Science/Database Management Assistant,
flexible work hours
RFS Stone Mountain Community Center
Work with the Development
Consultant to analyze and maintain RFS database. Assist in the creation
of queries and database management tools.
Requires: A commitment of at least 3 months, 6-8 hours per week.
