Reporter Julie Peterson introduced viewers to Mubonge Twachoka and his family, who fled the Democratic Republic of the Congo and lived in Tanzanian refugee camps before settling in metro Atlanta in 2010. Taking Literacy One Step at a Time
When Family Literacy volunteer Allison Martinez visited the home of RFS client Hasta Pokhrel for their second lesson in October 2011, she didn’t expect to take a fieldtrip to a Nepali market. But Hasta, a kind and welcoming woman, wanted to give Allison a taste of everyday life for a Nepali refugee in Clarkston. “I was a little overwhelmed,” says Allison. “I was the only English speaker there. For the first time I really got to see just how it feels to have everybody speaking a different language than me and have people look at me strangely. Dartmouth Fellow Credits RFS for “Community Values”
Saudo Sheikh-Hassan first arrived in the US in 1996 as a seven-year-old refugee from Ifo, a Somali refugee camp in Kenya. “I spent most of my childhood there [Refugee Family Services],” says Saudo, now 22-years-old, a RFS Young Women’s Leadership fellow, and a student at Dartmouth University. “It felt like home, not an afterschool service.” Read on...
